Are you interested in the Keto/Low-carb lifestyle? But like many of us, you get tired of just meat and cheese and then some bland, boring side? Do you search low-carb side dishes and get exhausted with almost all of them containing some form of broccoli or cauliflower?
Well, I have been testing a number of Keto side dishes that will delight your palette and more importantly DO NOT CONTAIN BROCCOLI OR IT’S PALE COUSIN CAULIFLOWER!
Living a low-carb life isn’t easy. Finding exactly what to eat each day can get discouraging quickly. I’m here to help! So I won’t be doing a “top ten” even though it may be convenient. I’m going to blog each meal that I make as I make it. So without further Ado…
Oh yes! There IS a fairly acceptable alternative to potato French fries. (Actually, I found more than 1)
If done correctly, the turnip root cuts, cooks and even has a similar consistency to a regular potato fry.
Couple things to consider before the recipe:
So here we go!

Sometimes you can find rather large turnips, but I got some smaller ones in a bag at Walmart. I found 1 was sufficient for my needs, because not everyone in my home is doing keto as I am. You want to slice it across into sections as below.

Not much else than to slice them long ways into fry shapes!

As you can tell, you’re probably feeling like you are in familiar territory if you ever sliced a potato. It’s honestly not that different. Difference here is, I wouldn’t season a potato. But you might want to season your turnip fries!

I used a little olive oil to stick the ingredients, salt, pepper, parsley flakes, garlic powder and coated them with almond flour as a last addition to see if it makes them crispier. I also threw a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese but it’s completely optional.

Don’t toss it around in the almond flour, it will make it separate and soggy blots. Just kind of pile it on. I felt like an egg wash would be overkill, so I left it out.
And last, I put them in the air fryer as loosely as possible for 15 mins. Then let them rest for a few mins, then another 5 minutes! And BOOM! Paired with some batter-less fried chicken, glory greens and topped with hot sauce! FLAVOR TOW… ok that’s someone else’s bit lol. Here we have a filling, wholesome and virtually carb free meal! The Turnip I used was a bit smaller than a full cup, so I imagine about 3-4 carbs. The chicken is ZERO carbs. The greens are hovering around the 1-2 carb area.

The Best Low Carb Steak Tacos EVER!
Hey! You might be wondering why there is a recipe blog on a clothing website. Well, I also have other interests and this is my website so I do what I want 😂
When I add this recipe to my top 5 things I’ve ever cooked, I am not exaggerating. This meal was so full of flavor, filling, satisfying and just spicy enough to be fun without overtaking the taste.
Keep in mind when preparing this meal that I am NOT a chef, however I’ve been cooking since I was 8 years old -watching the original cooking shows on PBS forever ago. And I have taste buds that are functional so really what more credentials do you need than that for food?
Let’s get to why you are here.
Prep time: About an hour total.
1-3 LBS of Steak, sliced into strips. I admit that I cheated and I bought already sliced steak because I get lazy. I used round steak for this one. But you can really use any beef you like. Pictured is strip steak, but I used round steak that was diced by the grocer.
1-3 green peppers
1 Red Onion
1 bunch Cilantro
I stalk of green onion
1 bag of shredded lettuce, or you can slice it up yourself.
3-4 tablespoons canola oil.
1 Sliced Pickled Jalapenos, I sliced picked whole jalapenos, but you can use already sliced ones. I enjoy the texture of pickled peppers, so I pick the pickled peppers… lol
1 jap pickled mango. I found this in the Mexican aisle at the grocery store.
1-2 Tomatillos (Optional). I am not sure what these did for flavor, but you can try them with and then without. They say it adds a citrus flavor. I did use them, diced. But I did want a LOT of veggies.
1-2 Limes (Optional) You can just really use lime juice, I found the lime to be… in the way? But I love Lime Juice in Mexican style meals.
1 pack of your choice low carb tortillas. They are readily available. There are 3 different brands at Kroger. They are at every grocery store that I’ve visited so far. Usually about 5-6 carbs per tortilla.
1-2 Avocados. (Optional). I didn’t really get the avocado experience in this particular meal, but I wanted to add as much healthy fruits/veggies as possible. They surely did not stand out.
Cumin
Curry Powder
Lemon Pepper
Garlic Salt
Thyme
Chile Powder
Heat the canola oil in a large frying pan. Wait until hot.
Slice the red onion and green peppers into strips (Fajita style) . If you don’t know how there’s literally a YouTube vid for everything. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVXvoQOMS2E
Drop the onions into the oil and fry them for about 5 minutes then add 1 of the green peppers sliced.
Add the sliced beef, add all the spices to taste, don’t go too heavy with the Chile powder. The pickled mango is pretty spicy. Let the beef cook on medium low for about 30 minutes. If you use a cheaper beef, you may need it to cook much longer to become tender.
While the beef simmers, slice the rest of the veggies. Do not add them to the beef. Slice them all and add them to a bowl and toss like a salad.
What I did with the 2nd green pepper was added it LAST to the beef so it could blanch a little, I really didn’t want stiff crisp peppers for this meal.
Once the beef is tender to your preference, it’s DONE!
Heat up a tortilla (I flip it on my gas burner on the stove but I don’t recommend unless you know what you are doing). Just use a griddle or pan.
Spread the veggies on the tortilla then top with the beef then add a dollop of that spicy pickled mango and thank me in the comments for one of the best meals you’ve eaten, whether low carb or not! 😉
If you really want to limit your carb intake, just eat it like a salad. That’s what I did when I went back for seconds! 😅
I would HIGHLY recommend not leaving out the pickled mango. It did something to this meal that I haven’t experienced in many years. It made it DIFFERENT. Fairly low in carbs, according to the bottle it’s about 2 carbs per tablespoon. You won’t need more than 1 or MAYBE 2 tablespoons if you really want it saucy.
